Tang Concubines Cutting Edge Musical
Dr. Dennis Law has done it again. While he no longer practices medicine, the Denver surgeon certainly hasn’t lost his touch. He is now devoting full time to the entertainment biz as the C.E.O. and President of the Centre for Performing Arts in Vancouver. The Law family purchased The Centre in 2002. The venue is the perfect launching pad for what Dennis has labeled Action Musicals.
Tang Concubines is the company’s most recent action musical to play the Buell Theatre in the Denver Center for the Performing Arts. As usual, the show is written, produced and directed by Dr. Law. As with “Heartbeat” and “Terracotta Warriors,” both of which have played Denver, the entire production is over the moon. absolutely beautiful, Told with a combination of dance, martial arts, opera, and orchestra, the tale of two of the Tang Dynasty’s most powerful women is spell binding.
I’m not usually a fan of loud music but I love this over-the-top assault on the ears. To refer to the music as “loud” is rather like referring to a full grown lion as a kitty. Two drummers/percussionists who hold forth in the orchestra pit are the only visible musicians. They lend a wonderful sense of flare and drama to the orchestrals. My guests weren’t as enthralled by the volume as I was but they did share my fascination with and appreciation for the production. The vibrant music, spectacular sets, costumes, and enormous talent of the eighty cast members all contributed to a brilliant experience.
